ARC Book Review: This Sea Within by Deborah J. Brasket

This Sea Within by Deborah J. Brasket is one of those stories that slowly pulls you into its world and makes you feel emotionally connected to the characters and their journeys.

Set against the backdrop of San Balanque, in 1971, during a time of political unrest and uncertainty, the story beautifully captures the atmosphere of a place caught between history, identity, and resistance. The setting feels so vivid, layered, and emotionally alive. The author does such a wonderful job describing the surroundings, culture, art, and tension of the era that you can easily imagine yourself walking beside the characters through every moment.

One of the things I loved most about the book was our FMC, Lena Landonโ€™s character. She is headstrong, passionate, and determined. She is the kind of character who goes after what she wants despite the complications around her. I especially enjoyed watching her explore her heritage and uncover layers of herself throughout the story. The emotional depth in the narrative felt very real, particularly in the way her relationships are described and unfolds as the story progresses.

Lena and Raoulโ€™s chemistry was another highlight for me. Their attraction is immediate, intense, and believable from the very beginning. I liked how their connection was not just romantic, but also rooted in trust, shared purpose, and the cause they were fighting for. Their dynamic added both warmth and tension to the story, making their scenes together genuinely engaging.

The backdrop of conflict, history, and art added so much richness to the novel. Since Lena is an art student, the descriptions of art and heritage felt immersive and meaningful rather than just decorative details. Every character felt thoughtfully written, and the authorโ€™s storytelling style made it easy to visualize every setting so vividly that at times it felt like I was experiencing San Balanque alongside Lena herself.

What stood out to me most was how beautifully the story balanced emotion, romance, history, and self-discovery. The writing has a cinematic quality to it, and the atmosphere stays with you even after you finish reading.

Overall, This Sea Within is an emotional, immersive, and beautifully written story with strong characters, meaningful themes, and compelling relationships. I truly enjoyed reading it and thank the author for sharing an advanced reader copy with me.
