I had been putting off reading The Love Hypothesis for the longest time. I’d seen so many mixed reviews that I wasn’t sure if it would live up to the hype. But after seeing the trailer for the movie adaptation, I finally decided it was time to pick it up, and I’m so glad I did because this book absolutely did not disappoint.
Ali Hazelwood delivers a fun, heartwarming romance that had me smiling far more than I expected. It’s witty, engaging, and packed with enough banter and awkward moments to make the characters feel incredibly real.
The story follows Olive Smith, a PhD candidate who finds herself in a fake dating arrangement with the infamous Dr. Adam Carlsen. What starts as a simple attempt to convince her best friend that she’s moved on soon turns into something far more complicated.
Olive is exactly the kind of heroine I enjoy reading about. She’s intelligent, sarcastic, slightly chaotic, and refreshingly self-aware. She isn’t perfect, and that’s precisely what makes her so relatable. I found myself laughing at her inner monologue more than once.
And then there’s Dr. Adam Carlsen. A man of very few words, intimidating on the outside but quietly thoughtful underneath it all. He’s the classic “looks grumpy, is actually soft for one person” kind of hero, and I’m definitely not complaining. While reading this book, I couldn’t help but think of The Favor by Suzanne Wright (Book Review here) Adam gave me a similar kind vibe; reserved, dependable, protective, and someone whose actions spoke much louder than his words.
The chemistry between Olive and Adam develops at just the right pace. Their conversations, the fake dating setup, the slow realization of their feelings, and all the little moments in between made this such an enjoyable read. It felt light without being shallow and romantic without becoming overly dramatic.
The Love Hypothesis completely won me over. Sometimes the most hyped books don’t work for me, but this one absolutely did. If you’re looking for a slow-burn romance with fake dating, lovable characters, and a hero who quietly falls first, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a chance.
