Honor’s Splendour by Julie Garwood is one of my all-time favourite historical romance books. This is one of those books that pulled me in from the very beginning and kept me engaged until the very last page. If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for historical romances, especially when they come with a strong alpha hero, a feisty heroine, plenty of banter, and a romance that takes its sweet time getting there. This book has all of that.
The story brings together Madelyne and Duncan, and honestly, these two together are just so good. Their relationship starts with a kidnapping, but of course, things don’t stay quite that simple. There is plenty of tension, bickering, misunderstandings, and those little moments where you can see the feelings slowly creeping in.
Duncan is your typical Julie Garwood alpha hero; strong, commanding, protective, and very much a man who knows what he wants. But underneath all that is a softer side, especially when it comes to Madelyne. I loved watching that side of him come out as their relationship developed. He may be intimidating to everyone else, but Madelyne manages to get under his armour.
And then there’s Madelyne. She is slightly naive and innocent at times, but I wouldn’t call her weak. She knows when to stand up for herself, and I particularly enjoyed seeing her hold her own against Duncan. She brings a warmth and innocence to the story that balances his more intense personality really well.
What I also love about Julie Garwood’s historical romances is that the romance doesn’t exist in isolation. There are family dynamics, friendships, conflict, humour, and enough action to keep the story moving. The supporting characters add to the overall charm without taking away from Madelyne and Duncan’s story.
I’ve read a lot of historical romances over the years, but Honor’s Splendour remains one of those books I can happily recommend whenever someone asks me for a good historical romance. It has the kind of romance that makes you want to keep turning the pages, characters you actually care about, and a hero who is very easy to fall for. (Duncan, you have some explaining to do!)
If you’re a fan of historical romance, forced marriage, alpha heroes, strong heroines, banter, and slow-building chemistry, this one deserves a place on your reading list.
