Book Review: Trust No One by Jayne Ann Krentz

This is the first book I’ve read by Jayne Ann Krentz, and I absolutely love it when my first experience with a new-to-me author turns out to be a good one. Trust No One was exactly that for me.

This book is a great balance of suspense and romance, with enough mystery and danger to keep things interesting without letting the romance take a backseat. And somehow, I finished this book in one day. That usually tells me everything I need to know about how much a book has hooked me.

Our FMC, Grace Elland, is smart, capable and, despite everything she has been through, someone who still wants to believe in the good in people. When she discovers her boss murdered, the incident brings back memories of a traumatic experience from her teenage years. I really liked how her past wasn’t just something mentioned in passing but actually played an important role in the story and in understanding Grace as a character. She has her fears and vulnerabilities, but she isn’t portrayed as helpless because of them.

Then we have Julius Arkwright, our MMC, who is pretty much the opposite of Grace in many ways. He is intense, practical, successful and definitely someone who likes having a plan. He also has that slightly intimidating, no-nonsense personality that I enjoy in a hero. What I particularly liked was how he didn’t try to fix Grace. He supported her, challenged her and slowly became someone she could rely on.

I liked how naturally their relationship developed. It wasn’t an instant, over-the-top romance. They meet under slightly awkward circumstances, get to know each other, and gradually become more comfortable with one another. Their differences actually make their dynamic more interesting, and there is enough chemistry and humour between them to balance all the suspense happening around them.

The mystery also kept me guessing for quite a while. There are secrets, stalking, murder and connections to Grace’s past, so there is always something going on. I also liked the little bits of humour sprinkled throughout, especially because the story could otherwise get quite dark.

Overall, Trust No One was a very enjoyable first read from Jayne Ann Krentz for me. It gave me romance, suspense, mystery, strong characters and enough twists to keep me turning the pages. And finishing it in a day definitely says something. I have a feeling this won’t be my last Jayne Ann Krentz book.
