I first read Just Listen by Sarah Dessen back in 2013, and even now years later— so many books later— it still remains one of my favourite YA (Young Adult) novels. I picked it up at a time when I was just finishing school, and Annabel’s story at that time felt so relatable back then… and honestly, even today there are moments when it still does.
One of my all-time favourite quotes is from this book itself:
“Don’t think or judge, just listen.”
It’s simple, soft, and yet it hits harder the older you get.
This book is powerful in so many ways. It talks about healing, the kind that is slow, gentle, and how it is completely different for every person. It shows how the things we choose to say (or choose not to say) shape us and sometimes hurt us more than we realise.
Annabel’s character beautifully represents the pressure of being “perfect.” The girl who looks calm, composed, and sorted from the outside but is quietly unravelling inside. And then there’s Owen — stubbornly honest, wonderfully imperfect, and committed to his personal mantra of always telling the truth.
Sarah Dessen writes their journey with such tenderness. The family dynamics, the friendships, the loneliness, the music — everything comes together in a way that feels very real and very human.
Even today, when I look back, Just Listen is one of those books that has a permanent shelf in both my heart and my library. It’s beautifully written, emotionally layered, and carries a quiet strength that stays with you much after you close the last page.
A timeless YA novel that grows with you, understands you, and reminds you — sometimes all a person needs is for someone to Just Listen.
Some of My Other Favourite Quotes from this Book:
- “Silence is so freaking loud.”
- “Story of my life.”
- “People get mad Annabel. Its not the end of the world.”
