5 Books That Healed Me at the Right Time

There are moments in life when you donโ€™t just read a book but you meet one. A story, a character, a page-turner that somehow arrives exactly when your heart needs healing. For me, books have always been more than just stories. Some of them arrived in those โ€œrightโ€ moments, almost like the universe knew exactly what I needed.

Here are five books that healed me, helped me grow, or simply held me together when I needed it most.

1. Who Moved My Cheese? โ€” Spencer Johnson

First read in February 2026.
Change can be scary. Unexpected. Messy. And sometimes absolutely overwhelming.
This little book (short but HUGE in wisdom) came at a time when I was navigating transitions in life. It has a simple but powerful message that change is inevitable, and adaptability is survival.
My Favourite Quote: โ€œWhat you are afraid of is never as bad as what you imagine. The fear you let build up in your mind is worse than the situation that actually exists.โ€

2. A Manual for Living โ€” Epictetus

First read in October 2023.
This tiny book changed me, my thoughts and my life. This book (philosophical yet accessible) became a sanctuary of calm. It offered perspective. It reminded me that while we canโ€™t control everything, we can control how we respond. It taught patience, inner strength, self-awareness.
My Favourite Quote: โ€œAnd the way to be free is to let go of anything that is not within your control.โ€

3. Just Listen โ€” Sarah Dessen

First read in December 2013.
This book is powerful in so many ways. It talks about healing, the kind that is slow, gentle, and how it is completely different for every person. It shows how the things we choose to say (or choose not to say) shape us and sometimes hurt us more than we realise. It showed me that itโ€™s okay to feel broken, to heal at your own pace, to listen more than you speak.
My Favourite Quote: โ€œDon’t think or judge, just listen.โ€

4. Dream a Little Dream โ€” Susan Elizabeth Phillips

First read in July 2024.
There are times when life seems heavy. When hope feels like a far-off dream and youโ€™re clutching onto inspiration like itโ€™s a lifeline. This book is a gem. The story is woven in a beautiful way, and it just healed me in ways I cannot describe. Its promise that love, hope, and dreams are worth holding on to. A reminder that sometimes, amidst chaos, love stories (even fictional) can soothe the soul, make you smile, and remind you that light exists.
My Favourite Quote: โ€œIronic, isn’t it, what religion does to people?”
“I guess it’s more ironic what people do to religion.โ€

5. Archerโ€™s Voice โ€” Mia Sheridan

First read in August 2014.
Love, loss, trauma, redemption, this story walks through difficult lanes, but ends with healing. It reminds us that love isnโ€™t always easy, but sometimes itโ€™s the deepest form of healing. That silence can be loud, pain can be real, but hope and love can still find their way in. This book taught me compassion for others, for myself.
My Favourite Quote: โ€œSometimes an understanding silence was better than a bunch of meaningless words.โ€

Books donโ€™t always have to be escapism. Sometimes theyโ€™re medicine.
These five books which I read at different phases of my life, taught me resilience, hope, self-love, healing, change, and the deep beauty of human emotions.

If youโ€™re ever feeling lost, overwhelmed, or just in need of healing, maybe try one of these. Because sometimes the right book at the right time can feel like a hug for your soul.

With love and lots of stories,
