My Top 5 Favourite Historical Romance Books

There’s something incredibly comforting about historical romance. The slow courtships, the unspoken emotions, the longing glances, and love stories that unfold in a time where words mattered just as much as actions. Whenever I feel like escaping the noise of the present, I find myself reaching for a historical romance.

Over the years, I’ve read many, but a few have truly stayed with me. These are my top 5 favourite historical romance books. Each one has its own charm, but all of them share one thing: unforgettable love stories.

Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas
If I had to describe Then Came You in one word, it would be bold. Lily Lawson is unlike the traditional historical romance heroine, that is, outspoken, unconventional, and unapologetically herself. Paired with the brooding Alex, Earl of Raiford, this book delivers fiery chemistry and emotional tension in equal measure.

Honor’s Splendour by Julie Garwood
This book is pure comfort. Honor’s Splendour was one of my earliest introductions to historical romance, and it still holds a special place in my heart. Julie Garwood’s storytelling is gentle yet emotionally rich, filled with loyalty, honour, and slow-building love. The relationship develops through trust, respect, and shared moments, making it incredibly satisfying to read.

It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas
Few authors do longing quite like Lisa Kleypas, and It Happened One Autumn is a perfect example of that. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Lillian Bowman and Marcus, Lord Westcliff, is deliciously intense. I love how their relationship evolves, from sharp clashes to deep emotional connection. The banter, the tension, and the eventual surrender make this book a joy to reread.

A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught
A Kingdom of Dreams is historical romance at its finest. Judith McNaught has a gift for writing love stories that feel grand yet deeply personal. This book is full of passion, conflict, and emotional depth. The love story unfolds against a dramatic backdrop, making it intense and unforgettable. Every reread reminds me why this book is considered a classic in the genre.

Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks
This book surprised me in the best way. Never Seduce a Scot is tender, emotional, and beautifully written. What makes it truly special is its heroine, who is strong, resilient, and quietly brave. The love story develops through patience, understanding, and genuine care, making it incredibly heartwarming.

Historical romance isn’t just about the time period. It’s about emotions that transcend time. These stories allow us to slow down, savour love, and believe in romance that’s built on connection, trust, and longing. If you’re looking to explore or revisit historical romance, these are a perfect place to start.
