Vanishing Point is quite different from the books I usually pick up. I tend to gravitate towards romance, so stepping into a historical fiction novel like this was a change. Thank you, Ellen Campbell, for sending me your book. I’m glad I got the opportunity to read it because it left me thinking long after I turned the last page.
The story spans over a century and follows multiple generations of one family, with Lila at its heart. Through her life and the lives of those around her, the story explores how time, choices, and circumstances shape not just individuals but entire families.
What I appreciated most was how many different aspects of life the book touches upon. It isn’t just about one event or one relationship. It explores family bonds, love, loss, health, sacrifice, and the emotional weight that people carry through different stages of their lives. Every generation has its own story to tell, and together they create a picture of life that feels true.
Lila, especially, was such an interesting character to follow. An artist though and through, she lived and breathed her art. There were moments when my heart genuinely broke for her, and then there were moments when I wanted to shake some sense into her. I think that’s what made her feel so real, that she wasn’t perfect, and she wasn’t meant to be. She made choices that I didn’t always agree with, but I understood where they came from.
The writing is thoughtful and easy to immerse yourself in, and I enjoyed watching the story slowly come together across different timelines. Rather than relying on dramatic twists, the novel lets its characters and their emotions take centre stage, making the journey feel authentic.
Overall, Vanishing Point was a memorable historical fiction read that reminded me why it’s good to step outside your usual reading comfort zone every once in a while. It made me feel, reflect, and appreciate the lives and stories of its characters.
